Okay, so here’s my dilemma. I was really all about Age of Conan‘s War Mammoth. I had to have it. But the more I think about it, the more I think I’d prefer the Rhino as my preorder bonus mount. According to the Funcom site, different retailers offer different mounts with their pre-orders. Wal-Mart and Amazon, which sell the collector’s edition for $10 less than Gamestop, pack in a fancy bow instead of a mount. Gamestop offers the mammoth. Best Buy is apparently the only retailer rumored to pack in the rhino if you pre-order with them, but there’s nothing listed on their website at all– not even the game. According to the AoC forums, the rhino is very easy to come by if you’re preordering… in Europe.
I suppose it’s all a little silly: whatever mount we’re granted won’t be accessible until level 40 (hence why they throw in a mount bag as something to tide you over until then), and by the time you reach 40, you can probably pick whatever mount you want, though if you earn an in-game one, it won’t look as fancy as the pre-order version you get gifted with. And let’s face it… the rhino looks pretty damn sweet. Plus he’s fast, which means I’ll be able to quickly gore Jason, Mark and Jim before they have a moment to react.
Yet whatever. I want the game badly, even at the collector’s edition price, and I won’t let it come out and not be able to join all the Massive Members on launch day. So now the question is… how long can I wait before preordering and “settling” for the mammoth… Tick, tock…
Slight problem to your plan. From what I just read yesterday, the pre-order mounts are slower than the in-game mounts, move just slightly faster than walking, and you cannot fight from on top of them, no mounted combat. The info was linked from the main AoC site and is here:

So other than a status symbol, looks like these pre-order mounts will be nothing more than a show piece, not a real mount like the horse. Hopefully they’ll add more mounts to the game.

Noah said “mount.”
Scythe – both the Mammoth and Rhino will be used in PVP even the preorders; true they will both be slower than the horse but than is a limit on the mount type itself. The both will actually be able to do structural damage to buildings in PVP.
Horse=fastest, weakest, character can attack from it, confirmed to have at least one attack.
Rhino=middle range in speed and health, some character attacks possibly but limited, does some building damage.
Mammoth =slowest and strongest, limited character attacks but has several beast attacks, does good structual damage to buildings (informed rumor culled from forums, devlogs etc)
It is rumored that spell casting from them “might” be available
Just went by BestBuy. The preorder is definitely the rhino.
I’m going to preorder from bestbuy.com. I assume all mounts are available for sale when the char reaches 40. It’s just the preorders are a different color. Can you confirm that?
As per AoC: “At launch, the only way to obtain such a beast is to pre-order the game at select retail chains where it is on offer.” It says the same thing for either the war mammoth or the killer rhino. I pre-ordered my Noah-thrashing rhino from Best Buy last Sunday.
Jimmy, did you order it online or at the store. My local store doesn’t have a preorder for the CE. BestBuy.com has one but doesn’t mention the rhino. I’m wondering if I should order from .com or just go store to store looking for the pre-order CE.
So you actually mean to tell me that you’re gonna give this one a shot Jimmy?
I’m shocked. Nay…I’m ecstatic!
We will crush our enemies together!
I hope they eventually have a free trial for a week or something simular to WoW. I can’t justify buying the game til I see if it’s going to make me turn green and smash thing or not.
The above message contained a Subtle Hulk reference, IMO. heh
I got it at .com with in-store pickup. They guy in my local Best Buy said the pre-orders would probably be available this week in-store (like he knows!). I’m pretty sure any pre-order from Best Buy will get you a rhino.
Never trust a sales person in best buy. They really don’t know their right hand from their left. hehe
Yeah, call me cuckoo, Jay, but I’m gonna take the leap. Any opportunity to crush enemies with my Massive buddies and not have to play WoW sounds cool to me. Plus, my sweet brother-in-law gave me a nice bestbuy gift card for my birthday and it just happened to be the same price as AoC.
Under our sandaled feet, brutha!
