No, I’m not talking about Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. Earlier this year THQ announced that they would be working on a new MMO in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Now, I’m not exactly sure what Games Workshop was thinking in terms of setting up competition for its other Warhammer game, but perhaps its a kind of “MMO insurance”. If one does badly…the other one can cover their ass.
When the devs from THQ were asked, this they simply said that Games Workshop’s tabletop games had never created competiton for each other. But this is the MMO bussiness! Not everyone playing has played the tabletop game, and many MMO players are fickle bitches who hang on to an IP long enough to get bored and then quit for the next one. With all the new MMO’s coming out, “MMO hopping” will probably become common, or at the very least, increase. When asked about features of the game, the devs responded with the usual, “we love the IP and it really lends itself to new features we plan to add to the genre.” Whatever the case, I plan on following Warhammer 40,000 Online and bringing you plenty of information on features and game mechanics they plan on adding. For the full interview check out this link.
I am all about MMO hopping. Scratch that… I’m not really, because I don’t like the $50 price that accompanies each hop. But once that game hits $10 (usually 6 months anymore) I’m all over it!
Personally I’m much more interested in the futurisitic Warhammer than the other one that’s coming out first. Why? Because I’ve already played WoW. Yeah, WoW’s a rip of the Warhammer franchise, but I’m frankly not interested in playing something that, thematically, is very similar and likely less polished than WoW currently is. Plus it just looks pretty dumb in most of the screens and videos I’ve seen. And the Brit marketeer doesn’t help.
Bring me 40K now!
Yes, Orcs with Blasters just take it up a notch. Also the Space Marines whole concept of being almost knights templaresqe (is that a word?) in the future has always appealed to me
to be honest, I cannot really visualize a method of adapting the 40k IP into a MMO.. at least not a conventional one… it’s not like wow or WAR, it’s ‘areas’ span galaxies.. but it can’t just be an eve style either as it wouldn’t be 40k without squads of space marines dying by the hundreds in an assault on a genestealer cult on a hive world…
I think, in general, sci-fi MMO’s are harder to create than fantasy ones…especially when you have to cater to things like: How does a player travel between planets? Is the ship combat twitchy or “turn based” as well? How will the economy balance out? How do we prevent some of the planets from turning into ghost towns? What will combat be like? How will PvP work? and it goes on….
Its not impossible, but I wish THQ luck, because they are going to need it…
