We have had a couple of feedback emails regarding our Episode 42 discussion of an AoC nudity toggle. We’ll address these emails (as always) in upcoming mailbag segments of our weekly podcasts; however, I saw this video today and felt it was so pertinent to this ongoing topic as well as others we have had on similar subjects that I felt I should post it here. Daniel Floyd, a professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, argues that video games, like films and novels, belong to a genre of artistic story-telling, though video games as an art is still in its infancy. He states that exploring sexuality is an important part of the development of an artform and identifies a few problems holding video games back on this front:

  1. Video games are still regarded by the public consciousness as toys for kids, who should be given access to sex;
  2. Gamers have a deep-rooted negative stereotype of being geeky, shut-in, nerds who live with their parents, which adds to the public perception that gaming is an immature hobby;
  3. Game developers help to detract from sex being taken seriously in games by designing them with hyper-sexualized characters and shallow sex appeal;
  4. The witch hunt stance of lawmakers and ratings boards scares game developers from seriously exploring sexuality in games; and of course,
  5. Americans are so fucking uptight about sex.

He proposes that the solution to this problem starts with the game developers, who should explore when and how to portray sex in video games in a serious way so that games can earn the respectability of other artistic media, such as painting, literature, sculpture, film, etc. that often feature sexual material.

As always, please feel free to send risqué comments and/or photos to male @ channelmassive . com ;)

    Nice! I think that’s the key…understanding that video games are another artistic medium as opposed to some crazy child endangering machination.

    You know, .. I DID notice that the picture in the clip was identical to Jason’s bio pics. But there is no way of knowing who is stealing who’s photo. :) The solution: More pics to prove you are who you say you are. :)
