The Spell Is Lifted — At Least for a Day

Those of you who listen to the show regularly know about my recent injury.  All play-by-play joking aside, I fractured my tibia and fibula sliding into third base playing league kickball on the 19th of May.  I had internal malleoral fixation surgery a week ago and basically ever since my injury, I’ve been sequestered to my own home to be sedated by Percocet while I keep my foot elevated above my chest except for when I use the restroom, shower, or get something to eat or drink.  Every now and again, a friend or family member will drop by and see how I’m doing, bring me a meal, run an errand for me, or take me out for lunch if I’m up for it.  It’s been hard thinking about all the things I have and will miss because of this.  I’ve missed two concerts at Red Rocks, three podcast recordings, a weekend of white water rafting and camping with a large group of friends, three weeks of work, and several hundred miles of bicycle riding — and that’s just to date, let alone the remaining 5 weeks in a cast and whatever limited activities I am reduced to for the length of the healing process.

For those who don’t know me, I’m a pretty sensitive guy who has historically been prone to depression.  This weekend was that big camping trip and I hadn’t seen any visitors since lunch on Thursday.  Being captive, stir crazy, and a little overly-full of self pity, I have to admit that I was feeling pretty down.  I think my dear friend Mark may have sensed this in a phone call on Saturday.  He took it upon himself to tell me that he was going to pack up his desktop and come over for an unplanned mini-LAN party on Sunday to play Age of Conan.  1:00pm came on Sunday and Noah comes through my door with his computer on his back, a Slurpee in one hand, and a Snickers in the other and asks if this is where the party is.  Mark was a few minutes behind.  Jason had some obligations at home, but would join us online.

We set up in no time and logged on with some level 7 alts that we had created specifically to play only when the four of us are together online.  Grabbed and shared a bunch of quests and decided to head on over to the White Sands Isle where several of these adventures lay.  Jason logged on and Noah, Mark and I stood on the shore awaiting his arrival.  Then, the dancing began.  Noah’s burly Bear Shaman doing outlandish scissor kicks and summersaults, Mark’s dark little Tempest of Set erotically undulating like a belly dancer, and my Dark Templar kicking up a river dance by our little oar boat on the white sandy beach.  Then the clothes began to shed and naked we danced, gathering up the stares of onlookers.  I haven’t laughed that much in weeks.  We all laughed hard at this pagan ritual until Jason washed up from the waves several minutes later.  Standing in his robes and cape with his minions by his side, all he could do was emote a knee-slapping laugh.  It’s hard to believe, but none of us had the presence of mind to actually capture a screenshot of the event.

We gained our composure and did our quests — opening up the bellies of the native beasts to collect gems, gathering mushrooms, coconuts, panther meat, and wine bottles, warding off the Picts, pruning down the flesheating plants, tromping through the jungles, climbing over hilltops, trampling through the ruins, marching down the beaches, and swimming in the pools.  It was a great time.  I think everyone really likes the characters we’ve rolled and overall the game itself.  The day went by quickly, but for that day, I had forgotten about my rafting/camping trip, the things I have and will miss this summer, and my sadness, and I basked in the friendship that is simply named Channel Massive.

Thank you my friends.

Glad to hear your feeling a little better. I can semi-empathize with your situation. While I’ve never had a bone-breaking injury, I have a chronic Lung issue (Never smoked a day in my life) and have been forced to stay at home for 2 months+ on short term disability, not even going to work. Have you reached the point where you ‘miss work’? I’m not all that crazy about my work, but I dont LOVE it. But I can remember being BORED. There’s only so much Movies/TV/MMO’s you can take 24/7 before you wish for the Mundane-ness of your old life to get back too. Glad to hear you have such a good group of Peep. :-) From the one’s I know from Wow, It’s a little lonely w/o you guys. ^_^

    Um…I wasn’t emoting a knee-slapping laugh.

It was the /vomit emote. :O

Either way, glad you had a moment of fun. I wish I could have made it in person, but I had a ton of stuff to do around the house and couldn’t get away.

I beg to differ … Only two people in history have broken their leg playing chess.

That’s arguable since you and one other person in history have broken their leg while playing chess … Seems like you fall right into the category.

Ah, OK … If it’s extreme chess I’ll let you off the hook. However, please note that you are walking a fine line and are about to fall into the “nerd” category…

Nope … Just on vacation and bored while I’m waiting on the crappy Blizzard updater to get my WoW installation up to date since I just reinstalled it from the original WoW release CD’s.
