The Pentagon Thinks that WoW is a Terrorist Tool

WoW Map Overlaid on Washington D.C.

According to Noah Shachtman at Wired in his article, “Pentagon Researcher Conjures Warcraft Terror Plot,” terrorists may be planning real life attacks in a virtual space such as WoW.  Dr. Dwight Toavs, National Defense University professor, demonstrated a hypothetical scenario to the Director of National Intelligence Open Source Conference.

“In it, two World of Warcraft players discuss a raid on the “White Keep” inside the “Stonetalon Mountains.” The major objective is to set off a “Dragon Fire spell” inside, and make off with “110 Gold and 234 Silver” in treasure. “No one will dance there for a hundred years after this spell is cast,” one player, “war_monger,” crows.

Except, in this case, the White Keep is at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. “Dragon Fire” is an unconventional weapon. And “110 Gold and 234 Silver” tells the plotters how to align the game’s map with one of Washington, D.C.”

I bet the terrorists had never even thought of this.

Now, thanks to Dr Dwight Toavs, They now have the knowledge they need to take over the world.

Or maybe it’s just the video game violence whiners bringing up another reason to ban video games?

110 senators, 234 representatives, the keep they are planning to destroy is the Capitol building, not the White House.

Since the plotters are clearly using AIM or IRC or something to chat, as neither has legal WoW names… what do they need WoW for? Just stick to AIM.

They should at least use an MMO that really could use the users, like Tabula Rasa.
