The Massive Mess of an Opinion Question of the Week…with free stuff!

It’s Monday.  I’m hungover.  It’s time to rant and bring up our Massive Massive of an Opinion for the week.  As a special bonus this week, you’ll get an opportunity to win some swag from SplitReason.com.    One lucky commenter will score a free t-shirt.  All you have to do is have an opinion and leave your wisdom in the comments section of this post to be entered into the drawing.    (Comments must be in by November 6th, 2008 10:00pm EST)

Also note, that you still have time to enter our Spoooooky Halloween Giveaway.  Get those scary stories in people!

And now it’s time to don my super-geek power suit and get angry…

If you’re unfamiliar with the Sword of Truth novels and into dark fantasy, I highly recomend them.  They are some of my favorite fantasy novels of all time and I’ve always thought they would make for a killer movie.  So imagine my excitement when I learned that Sam Raimi was producing a television series based off of them?  I mean, Sam-freakin’ Raimi!  The guy’s directed some of the coolest geek shit out there (Evil Dead 1&2, Army of Darkness, the recent Spider Man movies) and while I wasn’t a huge fan, he produced Xena: Warrior Princess (which was wildly popular for some reason).

This can’t possibly miss right?  Right?!

With visions of Mord-sith and wizard’s fire dancing in my head I popped some popcorn, cracked open a beer and sat in front of the television to watch the first two hours of Legend of the Seeker.

Two hours later I was choking on my popcorn, drunk and quite full of nerd rage.

Listen…I knew they were going to have to take some ‘liberties’ with the story.  I didn’t expect it to follow the novels line by line, but they really screwed this thing up.  I’m not going to delve into it’s inaccuracies too much since some of you haven’t read the series, but it could have been done a lot better and I can’t understand why the writers couldn’t stay a little more true to the story.

Needless to say, I was very disappointed and I doubt I’ll watch it anymore.  I don’t think that the Terry Goodkind fanboy in me could take any more episodes without going into a full blown nerd rampage. (edit–looks like I’m not the only one who is a little cheesed off)

So this brings me to the question for this weeks Massive Mess of an Opinion:

Would you like to see an MMORPG that you love turned into a movie/television series?  Which one?  Who would direct it?  Who might star in it?

This may not be considered a full blown MMO everyone but I’d like to see Hellgate: London turned into a movie. I don’t think it would translate well into live action so I’d like to see it in a CG medium very close to the art design of the opening movie.

They really created an opening movie that got you friggin’ excited for the game just like Diablo 2 did. Because of Flagships roots and the immediate reminder of Diablo 2 I assumed that at each chapter end we would get a well done cut scene that filled us in on the story of the game. What we got was a narrative over pictures which just hurt. I would love to be thrust back in to a demonized Post-Apocolyptic world. If it has an Epic battle with heaven and hell I’m there……Constantine………..!

For the movie we would need someone like Ridley Scott to direct the movie. I would really enjoy the person who turned a scifi movie about marines vs. aliens into a nailbiting horror flick.

I’d like to talk about casting but I’ll let you guys brew on that!

I will plead the 5th due to not watching the show itself. (Have it downloaded in Hi-Def, but have so far been backed up on my regular series thanks to Fable 2)

    But, I will state this.

I try to look at these works as separate works of art. I do NOT expect Shakespeare, but at least something fun.

My reasoning always goes back to LOTR. Even though the movies did NOT follow the books, it was it’s own piece of art. And I feel it was an incredible piece of work, and is my number one movie of all time (which had previously been held by Bladerunner)

I watched it to admire Peter Jackson’s work and not Tolkien’s work. I already did that.

Try to disconnect from the books if you can, and make the show worthwhile for one reason. We have no GOOD fantasy TV series right now, and having one or two is bliss…

(Example: BBC series Merlin takes liberties with the story of how Merlin found his way to Camelot and even has Guinevere within it’s walls as a frumpy maiden at hand for Morgana who is Uthers Ward…oh and she has a crush on the frumpy young Merlin…but, it is good silly fun)

First to comment on the Sword of Truth bits… I’m a huge fan of Terry Goodkind as well. I had a rare opportunity to meet with him during one of his rare book appearances for Faith of the Fallen. I too was looking forward to the TV series. I haven’t seen it yet, however Jason’s comments fill me with fear.

I thought I’d share this link with everyone. Mr. Goodkind had some comments about how the TV series was going to be made before it came out back in Feb of this year.

Does his reasoning “jive” with the finished product for those that saw it, or has the series still been raped beyond redemption?

Now on to this weeks question:

I guess it’s not a true MMO, but it had multiplayer function. I’d like to see the Diablo franchise in a full Movie format, if done properly. Not sure who I’d want to star in it, but perhaps choose James Cameron (ala Aliens/T2) to direct it.

Well for those who don’t know they are making a live action warcraft movie (*retch*) anyways I would love to see a movie based on WAR. Mainly because they could make it a very dark and gritty movie, and at the same time keep to the lore of the game. Mainly because the lore of WAR isn’t very deep or concrete, liberties taken would play less of an impact on the watcher’s mind. As well as already having a great setting, the Warhammer universe has some pretty memorable characters. To direct I would choose none other than Peter Jackson himself, though ol’ PJ seems to have his hands full with Halo and the Hobbit films. A second choice of director would be Michael Bay. Why? Becuase let’s face it he makes some pretty damn good war movies. so her could make the WAR movie…geddit? (forgive my pitiful joke).
Who would star in it? None other than Jack Black himself. Oh and maybe we could throw in a “lah-dee-dah” Brad Pitt and emo Johnny Depp. As for women? Jessica Alba would make a pretty sexy High Elf archer chick. Of course Angelina Jolie would have to be a Dark Elf sorceress. At any rate whoever is making this movie is gonna pay a helluva alot for all that star power.

Comment on fantasy based movies/tv shows: Ever since the LOTR trilogy, many movie companies have tried cashing in on the fantasy film gimmick. But ever since LOTR none of them have hit the mark. The first Narnia movie was a fine attempt and was a monetary success but it can’t move away from the fact that it is, above all else, a children’s novel. Every other fantasy movie has basically tanked. Why? Because they do crap like they did to poor drunk Jason. So while I’m waiting to geek out all over season 5 of lost, I may as well turn off the TV. Except then I’d miss Fringe, so I won’t. I guess you can’t dissmiss the fact that having avid fans of a fantasy series coming to see a movie or tv show expects a bit more than to be treated as a way to make a quick buck. Let’s just hope they don’t spoil poor Robert Jordan’s WOT series with a crap tv show (which apparently they planned on doing up to his death). My condolences for your wasted time Jason. Next time just remember you have an Orc waiting for you to level the crap out of him and leave Sam Raimi to his sorry mess :p

    ——————————–

Yes / EVE-Online / Jason / Mark, Jason, and Noah.

Yes because I like movies. EVE-Online because it’s the best MMORPG ever made. Jason because I believe under his drunken, bloodshot eye he could make something worthy of being presented as a Sci-Fi channel original. I want to see Mark, Jason, and Noah in the movie because I want to see the neck beard, emo bangs, and raper mustache in action.

I would also like to see a cameo of the Nameless One just so I can see the M-Team podkill him.

Make sure you look at the movie and the blooper reels that are linked at the bottom of the post. Best game movie ever.
