The Massive Mess of an Opinion Question of the Week (Sponsored by

Well whaddya know?  It’s Monday again and that means it’s time for another installment of The Massive Mess of an Opinion.

Congrats to out to Dihard (with a vengeance)  for winning last weeks t-shirt giveaway.  Rumor has it that he’s running around town with no clothes on and scaring little old ladies so we thought we’d throw him a bone…

But the love doesn’t stop here!  We’re running another t-shirt giveaway this week (courtesy of  Same rules apply as last week.  One lucky commenter will score a free t-shirt.  All you have to do is have an opinion and leave your wisdom in the comments section of this post to be entered into the drawing.    (Comments must be in by November 20th, 2008 10:00pm EST)

So what’s bugging me today?  First off…the losers over at Starbucks screwed my order up this morning.   How hard is it to give me a hot chocolate?!  A PLAIN hot chocolate!  It’s not like I ordered a friggin’ “Venti Non-Fat, No Water, Seven Pump, Chi Tea Latte with no whip” like the crazy ditz who ordered before me.  Sigh…but I digress.

Here’s a Another Teen Gamer Tragedy Story that could have ended a lot worse.  The 15 year old boy collapsed and went into convulsions after a 24-hour binge session with World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.  Tales like this only feed the into the fear that games are bad and the “we must protect the children” crowd just eats this stuff up.

The question of the week is… have you ever gone on a game playing spree of your own?  How many hours straight did you play?  Did you almost die or did your health suffer from the experience?  And what about THE CHILDREN?!

    I did just this weekend.

For six hours straight I sat and kept going in “The Witcher”.

I think it had to do with the cards…

See, if you can bed certain females in the game, then you get a nice little card, with “NAKED” chicks on ‘em…

“Collect ‘em all” is my motto….

No, really, the game keeps you entranced. I also know it is a winner when the wife wants to start doing stuff for me when I need to hit the potty (and then SHE starts hitting on the chicks looking for those cards….yeah, I married a winner!)

Well I think we all know about my all day and night Diablo II binge wherein I fell asleep and subsequently awoke to find that my keyboard had become my drool-encrusted “pillow.” By that time it was 4am. I was somewhere in Hell in Nightmare mode with my Druid (Drood if you play WOW) and there I was staring at my nearly naked character standing next to Tyrael who appeared very disapproving of my negligence.

Had I not been thoroughly exhausted I’d have panicked as I had no idea where I had died and most of the fog of war was completely gone for the Hell level. I had a hell of a time backtracking the next day. It totally sucked.

Anyway, I went to bed after that and dreamed that I was trying to drive somewhere late at night and kept falling asleep at the wheel. I think it symbolized something…

Oh man, I’ve had so many gaming binges. My worst one was probably last year. I had my very first two week vacation and my wife was super busy with school and work. So I basically sat on the couch for two weeks eating fast food and playing Starwars Galaxies on my laptop. I was playing probably a good 14-16 hours a day, for the entire two weeks. I think I might have taken a break to go to the movies with my wife once, but can’t remember for sure … That whole two weeks was a fog.

By the time I had to peel myself off the couch and go back to work I had gained about 20 pounds and my back, shoulder, and wrist were hurting like crazy. I’ve since lost most of the weight and my pains have subsidded, so no long last effects.

On the up side, I did get a character up to level 63 and got master pilot! ;)

My wife isn’t a gamer, but wants that “Happy Zombie Jesus Day” T-shirt from really bad … Can we count all my submissions from now on for her so I don’t have to actually spend money on something other than hookers and blackjack?

I remember my first MMO, Everquest. I was stupid and wanted to get a rare item for my druid. I spent approximately 20 hours online just staring at the spawn spot waiting for this one mob to show up so I could kill it. it was a completely random spawn in a heavily camped area. People would log out there, wizards would bind and gate there. I got it, but the boredom almost killed me. The sad thing is, in the grand scheme of things, the Offhand item wasn’t that great….

Regarding that rumor with Dihard… I know him IRL and it’s totally true. He’s also scaring me. I had to lock the doors and bar the windows from terror. :-p

The longest that I have ever played an MMO straight is about 4 hours. With my schedule, I never have the problem of playing too long.

I think my longest MMO binge was probably that first task force for COH. I can’t remember the name of it. Anyway, it went horribly wrong but we were all too invested to surrender like sensible players. They later fixed it but I think I may have played for 10 hours solid before soiling myself. The next two hours were…squishy.

@Onigato: It was the paw that you were after right? You were camping that fucking zombie in Befallen?

I tried to do that a couple times, but would only really stop in for a few minutes to see if I could get lucky and catch the spawn. Usually it was camped, but one day I came in and was going to wait a few minutes since no one was around. While I was waiting this fucking bitch wizard came in right as that fucker spawned and out nuked me taking the kill. I rage quit that night and didn’t go back to EQ, like ever. It was the straw that broke the camels back. Those camps were just retarded. Brad McQuaid is the anti-christ.

@Nerrollus. I think so. I have to give EQ credit for one thing… Not only did it have it’s claws sunk into me for 5 years… they fucked up so bad on my preorder for the first EQ expansion through their online/ingame menus, I got a message and free copy of it from J.Smedley(sp) via FedEx.

I had a nice little 14 hour session of WoW last Thursday when WOLTK released. Perhaps its just me, but long gaming sessions in front of the computer usually result in a keyboard face-plant, not convulsions. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t consider the 15 year old’s demise the fault of the video game or it’s developers, but rather the parents.

Its the same set of values and shitty parenting skills that let a 16 year old drop out of school to become a professional guitar hero player a few months ago.
