Another One Bites The Dust

I saw this bit of info while trolling Michael and Scott’s blogs.   Another MMO bites the dust.

Tabula Rasa’s time of death is officially called at February 28, 2009.  At least NCSoft is trying to soften the blow with some decent parting gifts for those still subscribed to the doomed game.

My recommendation to those who are looking for a new virtual home is to put those free three months of City of Heroes to good use.  It’s still a decent game.

I hope you’re pleased with yourself Mr. Garriott.    While you were having delusions of grandeur, your self-titled game was going down the tubes.  I hope you sleep well tonight, knowing that a game that had your name on it failed while you were playing space cadet.

Enjoy the view from your castle, Dick.  Don’t come out anytime soon.  Your time as a visionary in the genre has come to an end.

What a same … Tabula Rasa actually IS a good game, it just needs a better care taker than NCSoft. If someone like CCP could take ownership of that game they could really make it into something special.

Garriott is such a fucking space case. I like how if you’re rich enough you’re eccentric, but if you’re broke your a fucking loon.

I agree! Garriot is a selfish bastard. I don’t think he will be welcome in gaming circles again.

Oh I’m sure he’ll find another company somewhere that will bring him into the fold and let him fuck up another game simply because he has the name.

With his name any small company would hire him because they need SOMETHING to give them a slight competitive advantage. I wouldn’t say Garriot’s glory days are over, I’d say he has just become a liability. We could still see great games under his name, but most people won’t be willing to pay for the risk. Don’t write him off quite yet, I think.

Hopefuly someone manges to do a bit of reverse engineering before they close those servers down. Many closed down mmos receive a “second life” (sic!) after their commercial death. They should intruduce a rule – you don’t want to support a mmo game anymore – release the code.
Open Source baby :) Take down the corporate slave masters :)

I totally agree with the Open Source idea. I would have loved to have seen Asheron’s Call 2, Auto Assault and now Tabula Rasa released in that format so that they might somehow live on and help new, up and coming gave developer/designers out. I guess only John Carmack is gutsy enough to do that type of thing though.

No need to make a big deal about it. Just open the source. We scavengers and gamers, people who actually care about games will do the rest. I know it takes a great man to appologize. Instead of “We’re going down and we’ll bury the wisdom in our tombs. At least there will be a ready script for Indiana Jones 11″ let them admit that – “Hey, we screwed in supporting you. Here, take it. You’ll do a better use of that. Teach it to talk and not piss its pants or whatever”.

What about people who bought the game like two weeks before the announcement? I know they’ve gotten an exchange tokens for other mmos or some other useless crap. But what if they actually care about the universe or like sci-fi mmos? MMO is not like yet another console title: You make it, sell as many as you can, then forget about it and move to another title.

Believe it or not but I still know some hardcore Ultima Online servers out there, and guess what – there are no signs of closing them down. No tv adverts, no product placement, no multimillion dollar budget. Just a fair fan base and a bunch of fanatics with coding skills.

I think hes scary, in a crasy way. I mean fine if you want a dungeon house or going to space but hes doing it in a crepy garriot way. Its sad to see Tabula rasa going down, it isent a bad game, with diffrent ppl it would have been awsome! I just hope garriot will stay in hes dungeon and play from now.
