Rose Colored glasses of Nostalgia. I completely agree with that. Not that games like Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot didn’t have some great things going for them. But people forget the suck and the old way of doing things and just remember the few spark moments of fun they had.

That being said, I agree with the idea that what we’ve had for the past 15 years is “Intelligent Design” and not so much real evolution. Because sometimes the developers pick a design choice that isn’t exactly a logical evolution from the past, they just change thing, sometimes because they don’t seem to understand what made them great, and sometimes because they want to experement. The end result is sometimes you get things that seem like they should work better. (2 realms vs 3 realms) But don’t seem to get the same great results. Of course, Warhammer is an awful example, that game was plagued with many more issues then the 2 realm vs 3 realm debate. But some people, like myself look at DAoC and Planetside as good examples of where 3 sides appeared to work! The only problem was balance and population. So then how do you fix balance and population, perhaps should have been a bigger question to the developers. Well sadly that’s harder to answer then “How many realms should we have?” And 2 realms is easier to work with compared to 3. But I ramble.

Over all, I don’t think todays games are crap, WoW’s numbers and continued cool new features (I think the LFG system sounds awesome) conclude that it’s still the best MMO out there. But could someone do something better? Sure, but what? That’s the hard question. The industry has been bad at answering the hard questions.

Love the new this as a podcast as long as it doesn’t make you guys late on the other one. I have SO FEW gaming podcasts that I listen to now, I really miss when the ones I enjoy don’t put out a show.

BTW LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. The new website design. I know it’s not new anymore but hey, first time I’ve listened to a show from the PC so I can comment. Somehow I missed all this blog-o-steria and recently did something similar but mostly about, where are we going with the recent release of MMO-lite/console-like MMORPGs. I’m not saying they are bad (STO) but I don’t consider them anything along the lines of “massive multi-player”. I’m not doing the Lifetime but am pre-ordering the game. See you there!!
