I had enjoyed listening to this podcast every week until you guys started bashing Arden (that crappy Shakespeare MMO).

Begone henceforth! Macbeth’s three witches shall be sure to deal with you before you know it…

Mark’s more interactive than me and actually clicked through to Rory’s website. He was the Art Lead for Arden! Alas, as a fellow creative guy I can understand the frustration of a project evaporating.

Use this handy-dandy collection of Shakespearean quotes to posit your own take on things. http://www.enotes.com/shakespeare-quotes/

My choice: “done to death by slanderous tongue!”

Well, Mr. Starks, it seems that if you truly have enjoyed our unabashed sarcasm and harsh humour for weeks, that you would expect us to have the same regard for any game — including Arden, who’s own creator was quoted as saying: “it’s no fun” I guess being the lead artist at Arden gives you a little more of a personal stake in what we say about the game, so suddenly our podcast isn’t so enjoyable when it pertains to what you’re working on. I call that hypocrisy.

I don’t recall commenting at all about your artistic design of the game, so I don’t know why your panties are in such a wad. We think it is funny that anyone would even conceptually think a game about Shakespeare would have potential enough to invest time and a quarter million dollars. My favorite quote of Edward Castronova was that he was “taking on too much by attempting to combine education and research. He believes that his experience should serve as a warning for other academics.” It was a stupid idea and the fact that it will never see the light of day is proof of that.

Anyway, I’m afraid if you’re looking for an apology, you’ll not get one here. Frankly, Rory, if you are going to be a professional video game designer, you better get a tougher hide because I guarantee this won’t be the last time someone critiques a project you’re working on.

There were far more factors that lead to Arden’s demise outside of the game being ‘no fun,’ which I do agree with — it wasn’t fun. My initial role was art lead but when we switched platforms due to stability issues, my job became that of a scripter. I had very little to do with the “fun” aspect of the game, but I did have quite a personal stake in the project.

Well, yeah, the podcast wasn’t so enjoyable when I heard you guys railing on something I had put an awful lot of time and effort into creating. Why is that surprising? I really don’t see this as hypocrisy. Criticism was something doled out literally every hour while working on Arden. As Noah said, it was frustrating seeing the project evaporate like it did. We had what we believed was a substantial budget, and we set out to make a fun game. We failed on both parts. I think that Castronova’s quote about it being “no fun” is all-encompassing. Not only was the game not fun to play, by the end of the project we all hated each other and nobody wanted to work on it anymore. The idea might have been stupid, but I think the premise could still one day prove to make a fun game.

I don’t want an apology. In fact, if you want to keep making fun of the game, please, go right ahead. I’m sorry for wasting your time.

I pretty sure we’re done making fun of the game — beating a dead horse gets old pretty quick.

Rory in all sincerity, may you soon spend your talents on a game of which you can be proud that will see the light of day; and also may you soon realize that we are fairly humourous guys well worth taking the time to give us another listen.

    Cheers.
