For anyone concerned, I am still alive. Since I haven’t been able to attend the podcast recordings lately due to blizzards, business travel, car problems, working like a dog, and last but not least, automotive assassination attempts while riding my bicycle, I want everyone to know that I’m still around and still a part of the collective that we call Channel Massive. Anywho, I came across this nice little article while reading the AV Club section of the Onion a couple days ago, entitled: “The Knights Who Say “Nerd”: 20 Pop-Cultural Obsessions Even Geekier than Monty Python.” Among them I found several that are very applicable to our Massive Staff:
1. Star Trek
I don’t think a podcast goes by when Jason Tiberius Genova doesn’t make a reference to Star Trek. Not to call the kettle black, we all are Trekkies to a degree — though I don’t think any of us have attended a convention; but man if I ever meet the right girl, we are gonna have the sweetest Klingon wedding ever!!! toH jIDogh.
3. Fantasy Sports Leagues
As far as I know, Jason and Mark are the geeks dwelling in this realm. I don’t see the appeal, frankly, but hey.
6. Battlestar Galactica
Dude, anyone who thinks that this isn’t the best fuckin’ show on television has their head so far up their ass, they probably can’t watch a TV anyway. Of course I’m talking about the new one. If you geek out over Dirk Benedict, I feel sorry for how often you got beat up in school.
10. Magic the Gathering
I remember when this thing came out, Mark had every damn card available. If I had to wager a bet, I’m gonna say Jason and Noah played as well. I only play card games if they come with the promise of female nudity — money, mana and more cards don’t interest me.
11. World of Warcraft
Ummmm, you’re reading this at ChannelMassive.com. Yes, the game which swept Jason, Mark and Noah away, leaving me all alone in Paragon City. Lame-ass GEEKS!!!! (You and 10 million others.)
12. The Simpsons
“Mmmmmmmm, unexplained bacon….” — ’nuff said.
16. Anime
Ahh, the wonderful domain of Noah — games, movies, tv series, comics, toys, etc. I had the pleasure of watching the classic “Ghost in a Shell” with him last week when he came over to visit me in my crippled state. Can’t say I will ever get a woody over it, but I can see how it’s influenced a lot of the cinema that I know and love.
In the end, I suppose the Onion didn’t do much more than state the obvious. Oh well, if the shoe fits. “Always look on the bright side of life.”
Some corrections:
3. Fantasy Sports Leagues – Noah actually played one year and did very well. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the kind of “fantasy sports” he thought it would be and he bowed out for following years.
6. Battlestar Galactica – Dirk Benedict is the finest B-list actor of his time. Not only was he the coolest Starbuck ever but he was also the “faceman”, Lt. Tempelton Peck in the A-Team. Talk about a double threat! That dude ruled…what ever happened to him? Oh…Celebrity Big Brother and a winning battle with prostate cancer…(http://www.dirkbenedictcentral.com/confess.php)
10. Noah hates MTG and has never played to this very day.
16. I suspect a dark secret involving Jason and a secret cache of Anime that he only pulls out when he can have some “time to himself.”
Well, I was close.
3. Just because he played one year, obviously didn’t mean he was into it. I agree the word fantasy means different things to different people.
6. I already said I feel sorry about how much you got beat up in school. Are you still his fan club president? Congratz to your buddy Dirk on his successful career and his health though.
10. This is the only real surprise to me.
16. This I suppose wouldn’t be much of a surprise, similar to the conservative Republican hypocrites and Catholic priests who bash on gay rights then secretly butt-rape little boys in airport restrooms and church chambers. Come out of the closet, Jason!
We’re geeks? Duh.
Thanks for the news flash Geraldo.
Wow…tying in a comparison between closet anime fans and Christian Conservatives who are really homosexual…
Brilliant.
You must have missed the last sentence of the original post, anime-perv, Lambchop.
Actually, I was commenting on the original article. I should have clarified that.
As far as our geekdom is concerned, if this is true…then I really can’t consider myself much of a geek as I’ve only really truly ‘geeked’ out on a few of them. I wonder what the limit is before we have to turn in our “Super Geek” identification cards to the proper authorities?
Aren’t you already a Registered Offender Lambchop?
16) otaku ftw
16. Yeah Kank, I get all my manga from the Android’s Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop. It’s the best… store… ever.
Funny List!
1. Yes.
3. No
6. Somewhat
10. Never
11. Visited, left me underwhelmed with content, but overwhelmed with little kiddies.
12. Occasionally
16. Nope, usually never, too stilted!
1. Star Trek – Yep, I guote it, I love it. I never got into Enterprise or Voyage but the other iterations were all very good. I really got into the last years of DS9 for reasons of which I am still usure.
3. I used to love FFB but now it’s more of a social thing to keep in touch with former coworkers and the like. I don’t really enjoy it too much any more.
6. BSG is a breath of fresh air to Sci-Fi for me. I can’t believe what they did with such a campy old series. It’s been really great thus far and the fact that they don’t plan to run it into the ground makes it even better. I can’t wait to see the final season unfold.
10. I used to love MTG but then with all the expansions and the “rich kid” syndrome I just kind of lost interest. I’d still play it if anyone I knew was up for a casual game or two.
11. Still playing WOW and I love it.
12. I used to watch it a lot but I think I’ve pretty much had my fill. I loved the Simpson’s movie. “Spider pig, spider pig…does whatever a spider pig does…”
16. Is such a no for me. I never got into Anime. I loved comic books though like old Ghost Rider, X-Men, Moon Knight (shut up Jason), Dr. Strange, Thor, and some independent tiltles as well. Mostly I was a Marvel devotee.
K then, if we’re all leaving individual responses, I suppose I should stand up for myself and cite my stance (great post, Jim, btw).
1. I do love Star Trek but I can’t quote it. I do have lots of Star Trek ornaments (and Star Wars!) for my Christmas tree which would suggest otherwise. And I have watched eps from all the series but not all eps in any given series. I never saw ST: Generations, the one ST movie I’ve not seen. I actually liked Enterprise in a lot of respects, and I enjoyed Voyager, too, though I wished they just moved on from the Lost in Space plot. I never got into DS9; since it went off the air, a few hardcore fans that are friends of mine have explained its supposed excellent plotting. They can have it. The reverence I have for the other two series, of course, goes without saying.
3. Laaaaaaame. Why drool over other people playing games instead of playing them yourself?
6. Mark talked me into BSG (as he did with WoW and a ton of other things, such a salesman) and I LOOOOOVE it. Of course I’m perpetually behind, always waiting for the next season to come out on DVD because I don’t pirate stuff and don’t have cable. Alas, at least I can love myself!
10. Words cannot describe how much I think Magic is lame. I knew I was a dork in high school, but I never felt as dorky as the Magic freaks. Maybe it was just the ones at my school– Mark’s actually pretty cool so I forgive his former Magic infatuation.
11. It’s fun stuff. I’m not hardcore, but I’m always game to play with friends. And I like it much more than my memories of EQ (the first few years).
12. Never been into Simpsons much. I saw a few episodes in the first few seasons and never looked back.
16. I totally know the nose-in-the-air stance many people take about anime– it’s very similar to my stance about Magic. In fact I was like that for a long time– the Magic players were lumped right in with the anime fans. But since then, I’ve found a select number of series that are as great as any prime time sci-fi/action show. So consider me a fan of anime– I appreciate the artwork and discerningly love a number of series. Though sometimes formulaic, I often find more inspiring or unique ideas in anime than I do in most mainstream American TV. And let’s not forget how much anime influenced The Matrix, snobs! I haven’t been to an anime con yet but actually wouldn’t mind going just to see unbridled, bloodthristy fandom– in cute kitty ears and short skirts, of course.
Mmmmmmmmm nobody told me about the short skirts…count me in!
